Want to make the web better for a chance to win cash prizes? Join the Baseline Tooling Hackathon!
Ever hesitated to use a new feature, wondering, "Is it safe to use yet?" Do you spend time jumping between MDN, caniuse.com, and various blog posts just to decide if it can go into production? This uncertainty is a tax on productivity for every web developer. What if your tools could give you the answer instantly? What if your linter, your IDE, and your CI pipeline automatically knew what's universally supported?
That's the power of Baseline. And for the first time, it's ready to be integrated everywhere.
From today through October 6, Chrome is running a hackathon to find the best new projects that use Baseline to accelerate the adoption of modern web features. Why now? This year, with the Baseline data sources reaching 100% feature coverage, we've begun to see new and improved web developer tools integrate Baseline data in really useful ways. Now, instead of leaving your IDE to learn the Baseline status of a feature on MDN, you can see it on hover in VS Code. We've also seen Baseline integrated into linters like ESLint to helpfully validate your code against a preferred Baseline target. But there are so many more possibilities to integrate Baseline into even more tools, including ones that may not even exist yet. That's where you come in!
We're calling on you to build the tools you wish you had. Consider your current web development workflow. How do you currently make decisions about whether to use new web platform features? What resources are you using and where are the biggest gaps? How can Baseline help streamline that process? If your idea is among the most innovative and useful, you can be a winner.
To get started:
- Read the rules to confirm your eligibility
- Register for the hackathon
- Start building your project
What you build is up to you; it can be something completely new or an improvement on an existing open source tool. Your project will be judged on how it uses Baseline to tackle a big, unsolved problem in a way that most web developers would find useful.
So, what's in it for you? We're awarding $10,000 in cash prizes:
🥇 First place: $5,000
🥈 Second place: $3,000
🥉 Third place: $1,000
💡 Most valuable feedback (10 winners): $100 each
Plus, perks money can't buy: The top three winners will be featured on the official web.dev blog and get a 30-minute private feedback and strategy session with the Chrome team.
The clock is ticking! The submission period closes on October 6 at 5pm PT, so don't wait to register and start hacking.
Good luck!
