Changes to the web.dev infrastructure

Hello, Paul here.

I wanted to share some news with you about this site.

I've taken the decision to move from a GitHub hosted version of the CMS to infrastructure that's shared across a number of different teams in Google. This will have an impact on how people contribute to the site, which I would like to explain a little more.

When we first created this site we had the intent to create "your bookshelf of web development". A site serving only what we thought your site needed to focus on, and we built custom infrastructure that used Lighthouse mixed with 11ty—the concept was very cool. As we learned how people wanted to use our site, we recognized that people wanted to choose their own path through what they felt was authoritative content. Therefore, we shifted to give web developers a modern perspective on web development and moved the /measure page to pagespeed.web.dev.

As our focus changed and our site became a content-only experience the need to maintain our own infrastructure grew less important. Therefore, I recently made the decision to change this site's infrastructure. I want more of our team focusing on creating the guidance and tools that web developers need, while the maintenance of our infrastructure can be handled by existing internal tools.

There are many other secondary factors, one of which is being able to hook into the localization infrastructure so that we can serve the developers whose primary language is not English.

We aim to keep a lot of the functionality the same and we will iron out any kinks in the migration over the coming weeks. This change will mean there is a change in our open contribution model. Instead of just opening a PR on GitHub, to contribute a fix or add some new content you'll need to submit it through our open issue tracker. We are still very happy to accept contributions, but I wanted to name and recognize that it will be significantly more complex for people to contribute simple changes. That said, in practice, we've been either creating the vast majority of content ourselves, or commissioning content (for example our web.dev/learn series of courses) from known experts in the ecosystem.

We will keep an archive of the current site infrastructure and content on Github, so if you want to see how we built the site and have access to its history, you still can.

We will also continue to ensure that content has the same Creative Commons license for all materials (existing and yet to be created) so that if anyone would like to take it, modify and host it themselves they can (with attribution.)

My intent is that I can put more effort into making this site one of the best web development resources available on the web.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this site over the years. It has meant a lot to me and the team that you have put time and effort into supporting this site.
